I am playing around with WHMCS and I've gotten pretty far, however when WHMCS tries to create an account, it does not select the pre-made package called "basic" that I created. I used lowercase... but it seems to put some random package data in there instead of the pre-selected one. any ideas?

don't name your plan "basic" it must be some pre-reserved package in the system.. i changed to basicsite and it works as expected!
