Hostname DNS

I’m trying to find the best way to setup my hostname DNS. Let’s say my server is host.domain.com. I have a siteworx account setup for domain.com. The nameservers are ns.domain.com, ns2.domain.com and ns3.domain.com. The nameservers have A records in domain.com’s zone. The host.domain.com is on a separate IP address from domain.com. The host.domain.com has an A record in domain.com’s zone. The domain.com has an MX record pointing to an external spam filter server, but the MTA hostname is host.domain.com. Do I need an MX record for host.domain.com?

I had a separate zone for host.domain.com but the Domain Status on the DNS Zones page said “Pointing to otherdomain.com” which it is not.

So I guess the question is, does the MTA hostname need an MX record? Or can it get by with just an A record?

Well I found a nice little page that answered my question:

I guess I’ll just ignore the Domain Status for now and leave the hostname in its own zone!
