Unable to connect to my SMTP server

Error “Unable to connect to my SMTP server” for ALL websites.

I had this problem 3 weeks ago, a restart of SMTP did NOT help, so Sagonet.com did the following which helped:

[root@server1 root]#/etc/init.d/proftpd restart
Shutting down proftpd: [ OK ]
Starting proftpd: [ OK ]

[root@server1 root]# /etc/init.d/httpd restart
Stopping httpd: [ OK ]
Starting httpd: [Fri Apr 30 09:10:55 2004] [warn] VirtualHost 65.xxx.xx.100:80 overlaps with VirtualHost 65.xxx.xx.xxx:80, the first has precedence, perhaps you need a NameVirtualHost directive [ OK ]

[root@server1 root]# /etc/init.d/iworx restart
Stopping InterWorx-web: [ OK ]
Stopping InterWorx-db: [ OK ]
Starting InterWorx-db: [ OK ]
Starting InterWorx-web: [ OK ]

This time nothing I did all the above myself, and nothing helps.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

PS. I can receive email fine, and all sites are up too.

Please e-mail the IP address of your server to support@interworx.info. We’ll report back when here when the cause is discovered.

After debugging this issue, we determined that RWF’s ISP had just started blocking port 25 traffic to any servers except their own. The SMTP on the server was ok, RWF just couldn’t access it from his location because of his ISP.

Yeah that’s right, Paul was very helpful.

But tell me this someone please, as I must be overlooking something.

What is the big advantage of ISP’s to do this blocking? Now I am just their mail server instead of mine, and I can still mail as happy as a Clam and Spam in Can if I want.

Its an issue of control. If you are forced through thier servers, they can cut you off at any time if they suspect you of spamming. It can also allow them to filter out worms as they pass through thier mail server (if they choose to incur that overhead). They can’t do much if your using a third parties mail server.
