Interworx Won't send mail.

I setup a new clean Interworx server and once again I’m having issues with Interworx features.

After almost 18 hours of working with support yesterday we still don’t have a system that works. I’ve posted this to server fault, unfortunately with no responses. Does anyone have experience with setting up multiple mail servers with interworx?

Completely wrestling with this. I'm using Interworx panel, and they use qmail. I'm trying to get qmail to send emails for mydomain.com remotely and not locally - but only when the email was created on the local machine.

According to this picture/article-> http://thedjbway.b0llix.net/qmail/qmailflow.html my problem is that the server wants to deliver locally because mydomain.com matches. But I don’t want it to do that.

My setup is:

hqmail.mydomain.com is a kerio mail server altmail.mydomain.com is the server in question (interworx with qmail running)
When an email comes in via mx to hqmail and the user is not found, kerio routes the mail to altmail. so user1@mydomain.com is not in kerio but user1@mydomain.com is in altmail. The message gets delivered.

when user1@mydomain.com uses altmail to SEND an email and it contains user2@mydomain.com qmail tries to deliver the message to altmail, but what I really want is for it to deliver to hqmail always for any emails addressed to @mydomain.com and deliver direct for @anyotherdomain.com

I’ve tried fiddling with locals (domain is not listed) and virtualdomains but that doesn’t work.

I’ve also tried to use smtproutes mydomain.com:hqmail.mydomain.com but that didn’t work either.

The interworx folks logged in to my server and said it was a DNS issue, they ‘fixed’ the issue but now nothing works. It won’t even deliver mail to mailboxes locally:

@4000000054389a9e0220b35c delivery 15: failure: Sorry,_no_mailbox_here_by_thatname.(#5.1.1)/

This is all very frustrating. I hate to say this on their own forum but Interworx has been very difficult to get to work properly, I have three different servers running IW and all of them have ‘unique’ issues.

Hi mikei

Did you set smtp routes to domain.url:IPADDRESS

If so, please can you post a log to show what’s it’s doing

I’m not too sure what your support or IW might have changed, but I’m guessing your support will reply soon hopefully.

Is the other server working as expected re email from your post a week ago or so.

I’ll have to have a think about this post, but i trust this is not server you adjusted files on re common password is it.

Many thanks

John

All of the emails listed are current in siteworx. I can even log into those accounts using roundcube. mike@ however is not local and should have been sent out to remote mx

I did try smtp routes

Hi Mikie

I hope you don’t mind, and I have just tried to duplicate your issue, re mail delivery to an external mail server, when a domain is listed in IW but has email on a different server, and another domain listed in IW sends an email to this domain. Please see below, and as you can see it, it works lovely, with no smtproutes. (please note I used one of our Enterprise Dedicated mailers for this test - which is not IW)

I will have to have a think about your post, but I cannot see why your IW server would be treating email differently, unless you are clustered perhaps. However, I can understand why your receiving account unknown, if you have changed some files.

Many thanks

John

ok. I’m going to start from scratch and reinstall. How do I get copies of the emails so I can save them for users?

Hi Mikie
I would strongly suggest you create all new, and not migrate.
I also think to backup the users email would be time consuming and involved, as it uses MySQL, hashes and ofcourse, may also carry accross a mis configuration. You may be better advised to email out to your kerio mail server, and then email them back.
I would also consider you have a good think about how you want it setup, which I’m sure you already know, but given your posts, I have the impression that it is not clear sorry, hence advising a waiting time to be sure of how you want it configured. I might also consider clustering, which would make it easier to point, and allow mail/web site failover as you have 3 IW licences (clustering needs full licence, not VPS - but check the IW website for requirements).
I hope that helps a little, and the above is just my thoughts.
Many thanks
John

Just the emails, are they stored on the filesystem somewhere in .eml format?

I am fully aware of what I’m looking to accomplish. Not sure IW clustering would make a difference as clustering is only load balancing for web traffic.

Hi mikei

To be honest, even if you just copy the mail stores, you would need to make vpop mail aware, and you can’t go that without hash and MySQL.

In any event, I would suggest you make a full backup of each siteworx and thenook at home folder, or var/qmail or vpop mail.

Clustering covers both, mail incoming outgoing and web sites. You can load balance using differing methods, I like weighted round robin, but I’ve nuked our test cluster as were hoping to beta but can’t say too much.

I hope that helps

Many thanks

John

Hi mikei

Sorry, thinking about your post a little more re email copying.

I would do the following

Backup all siteworx accounts in full
Completely reload a fresh vps image
Default install IW cp
Do not make any changes to system ie php MySQL etc leave exactly as default
Create a new siteworx for your domain
Disable local delivery
Test email
If all works as expected, import all siteworx accounts except your domain

You never stated if your kerio is also set for dns etc on IW (this server) do not set it up

Confirm if all’s well

The import of the siteworx account should return mail store for users back, and I do not think the backup would contain any of the mail configs.

Once all above is completed, and shown to be working as expected, then go ahead and make changes as you require.

I hope that helps

Many thanks

John

John,

I’m not sure that you covered this use case:

when user1@mydomain.com uses altmail to SEND an email and it contains user2@mydomain.com qmail tries to deliver the message to altmail, but what I really want is for it to deliver to hqmail always for any emails addressed to @mydomain.com and deliver direct for @anyotherdomain.com

If I turn off the local delivery IW stops all ability to create or use local email accounts.

Am I missing it somewhere in what you stated?

Hi mike

Sorry, I thought it was understood we were only talking about 1 siteworx account for external mail

Just turn off the local delivery for the siteworx account you have issues with only

If you’ve told nodeworx plugins to turn off local delivery, please enable local delivery.

Many thanks

John

Sounds like this is just an issue with the implementation.

This post shows exactly what I want to do and how to do it, but I couldn’t get it to work in interworx.

https://qmail.jms1.net/multi-location.shtml

Hi mikei

Sorry, this has nothing to do with interworx, it relates directly to qmail changes.

It should be capable of been implemented, and IW should not be affected, subject to it been implemented correctly of course.

I can think of an easier way to do this, which does not involve changing config files, but does require additional domain or subdomain not used for email, but I’m digressing sorry.

If you want to implement the above, you will need to fully read up as the link suggests or pay an experienced sys admin/qmail to set up for you.

Many thanks

John

I got it working! I’ll post the steps tomorrow. After 3 days I’m going to go get some fresh air.

Hi pampero

Sorry, I believe mikei posted this update on a similar post, just search forum, but I think myself it would only be needed in a few cases for most installs

Many thanks

John
