What is de difference between mailboxes and aliases?

A mailbox is an actual email account, where you can access and send email eg me@mydomain.url
An alias does not exist, it is an alias on an actual email account which does exist, and email is accepted and put into the actual email account associated with the alias eg anything@mydomain.url goes to me@mydomain.url
An alias cannot send or receive from email clients or webmail etc
